When the right wing nut jobs are out opposing Gay Marriage, one of their biggest arguments is that allowing gay marriage will ‘de-sanctify the institution of marriage.’ Clearly I completely disagree, but there’s really no way to prove the error in their thinking because they won’t budge and allow us the opportunity to demonstrate just how wholesome a marriage between two people of the same gender can be. I’ve been racking my brain trying to come up with ways to prove this point, but have thus far come up empty handed. However, today I had an epiphany on this matter. The best way to protest these right wing whack jobs is not to prove them wrong; it is to prove them right. If they think that gay people will cause the demise of marriage, they make a valid point. We should manifest their foresight and prove it to them!
Gay marriage is in fact legal in all fifty States in this country. While same-sex marriage remains unavailable in most States, there aren’t any States which currently do not allow a man and woman to be married to one another. The law in most states is written that ‘marriage is between a man and a woman.’ This statement does not stipulate that the male and female counterparts involved must be heterosexual in order to enter into the contractual arrangement which is marriage. What could be less sacred in the eyes of the right wing freak shows than Butch ‘Cassidy’ marrying Nancy Drew! (Of course the words ‘Butch’ and ‘Nancy’ are not names in this instance; I am using them as expressive words to describe a bull dyke and a flaming queen!)
Not only would the mere existence of these marriages be a slap in the face to all people opposing same-sex marriage, there are other benefits to this arrangement. Once married, the couple now faces two decisions. The first option would be to stay married to each other, alternatively, they have the option of getting a divorce or annulment. The latter of these options would cause a pretty sizable increase in the Divorce Rates within our country. Especially considering the fact that once you are divorced, you would have the option to marry again and again and again! How can anyone proclaim that marriage, as it is currently defined, is a ‘sacred institution’ when the divorce rates skyrocket overnight?
As previously mentioned, the newly married couples, each comprised of a lesbian and a gay man, would also have the option to remain married. I’m sure you’re wondering why anyone would consider this as a viable option. The answer is simple. Marriage comes with over 1,400 benefits. Many such benefits cannot be contracted through a legal document with the exception of a marriage license, not to mention the fact that legally drawn documents such as a Will can be contested after a death occurs. While many of these 1,400 benefits would not be used by these non-traditional couples, there are a few which could be advantageous. Due to the fact that it is currently tax season, the first benefit is obviously the tax breaks provided to married couples. Other benefits include an automatic inheritance of property, including personal possessions and residences. The way this benefit would work is that when one of the marriage partners passes away, the surviving half of the marriage would automatically obtain full ownership of these types of items. They could easily pass these back over to the surviving spouse/significant other. Similarly, child custody would not automatically go to the State, allowing time to draw adoption papers to pass parental rights on to the surviving parent. Hospital visitation is another benefit of a married couple. A legal partner in a marriage has the right to authorize non-family hospital visitation during emergency situations. Thus allowing the actual spouse/significant other to visit their lover during an emergency hospital stay.
One drawback to this whole scenario is the fact that wedding licenses cost money. Not to say that gay people aren’t good for the cash, but that money goes to the local Government. Why would gay people want to pour any extra money into a State Government which actively discriminates against them? The only solution I can think of to this problem is to plan a vacation to one of the few states currently allowing same-sex couples the legal right to marry. During your vacation, make a quick jaunt down to the courthouse and tie the knot. This way, the money being spent will support a fair-minded, accepting, nondiscriminatory, unbiased Government office.
I would like to dedicate this blog to the founding fathers of the United States of America, the intelligent men who designed a Government for the people. Ingeniously including in the Declaration of Independence the following statement, “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” This statement does not mention anything about homosexuals being excluded from this insightful pronouncement of equality. Nor does it indicate that gay people should be denied the right to pursue their own happiness.

Mission Statement
My purpose in writing this blog is to provide a place for me to share my random thoughts, political opinions, day to day life stories, and random other items I feel are worthy of sharing with the world. I used to utilize MySpace for this purpose; however, I like the format of this site much better. That being said, my old blog postings which fit under the category, ‘Blakisms’ can still be read from my MySpace page.
